Recently, I've been hearing a whole lot about how the month of February, horror bloggers around the net would be dedicated to women and their role in the horror genre. That’s great, and I’m certainly all for it, and I was even thinking about doing a few posts specific to the subject matter throughout the month myself. Then today, I dropped by the wonderful wonder blog, Billy Loves Stu and was reminded that February is Black History Month. The fact that I had to be reminded is a bit embarrassing, but more embarrassing should be the fact that bloggers have taken it upon themselves to pick Black History Month as the month to focus on women in horror. There are 11, count them, ELEVEN other months that are there for the taking, so why February? I’m not taking shots at the people behind women in horror month - any other month, I would be all for it, but it’s a pretty stupid fucking thing to have it in February. I had no plans for a theme month, but I am gonna keep it real and make my main focus of February centered around African American cinema. I’m not prepared in any way whatsoever, but I can pull something out of my ass, plus it gives me an excuse to cover a few Blaxsploitation films!
Anyone have any suggestions or requests, please feel free to suggest and request them.

I'm excited to see what you cover Matt. Aside from some of the more obvious black genre cinema (no, not Leprechaun In Da Hood...okay, yes, Leprechaun in Da Hood), I really have next to no knowledge of what's out there. Personally, this month is going to be too busy for me to take up any theme, but I definitely support your choice.
ReplyDeletePfffffffft stop copying me Matt! http://horrordigest.blogspot.com/search/label/Black%20History%20Month
ReplyDeleteWhat if we just combine the two and spotlight black women in horror!
ReplyDeleteNo way! Women get their month in March. Having two months just ain't fair!
ReplyDeleteEmily: Leprechaun in the Hood came to mind, but I have a ton of ideas for films that I will cover that are a little bit more respectable! Little being the key word! I'll probably do Leonard Part 6!
ReplyDeleteAndre: Ha! For whatever reason, I missed that you posted that...I am a copy cat (I'm gonna change the date of this post to the 25th!)! We can be partners in crime though! Funny thing, I almost said in the post that I would make March MY Women in Horror month?! Maybe I will do it now...
Johnny: I actually thought about that too, but I agree with Andre, there's enough months for every one to get some love!
Yes! March is officially Womens History month so let's celebrate the women then. Although after this black history shunning I'm not entirely sure they deserve a month at all! ....mwahaha
ReplyDeleteMan, if I didn't already have so many other flicks to cover - I'd totally be doing a little Blaxploitation marathon. Looking forward to seeing what you cover man!
ReplyDeleteBlack Women in Horror Month is in MAY people!!! ;)
ReplyDeleteI've got my own agenda at MC. This February is my 3rd Annual Blaxploitation Month and it will stay that way. Women of Horror will have to wait. Black Women of Horror is interesting, but I don't see how that could stretched into a whole month...or even a whole week.
ReplyDeleteHow about February is Black Women in Horror Who Deserved Oscar Nominations Month? I must leave you all now, so that I may concoct a compelling case for Angela Bassett in Vampire in Brooklyn.
ReplyDeleteThis could take a while...
Since I do forty weeks (or so) a year of women in horror (or genre) with Beautiful Ladies of Genre, I don't feel like I need a special month for it. I didn't know that February was Black History Month so I'm going to have to fit a few titles in, but February means Valentines to me. Deep down I'm a big softie, kind of, but you'll see. Maybe I need a post about Black Horror Women that I Love? I mean Pam Grier was in Bones! and we all know how great that is!
ReplyDeleteAndre: I'm just gonna do tranny (sp?) month in March instead...much easier that way.
ReplyDeleteJosh: I have no clue what I'm gonna cover yet, but I am brainstorming ideas. Unfortunately, there isn't all that much to choose from that5 I would actually want to cover, but I will try my best!
Pax: I need a calender!
Rev: I certainly look forward to what you cover. I have been wanting to do some Blaxsploitation since I started this blog and what better time than now?!
Senski: I'll work on something for Tyra Banks in Halloween: Resurrection! That will take much longer, I think!
Bugg: You know Bones came to mind! I actually have what I'm reviewing for Valentine's Day already. Actually, it's a review I wrote in November, for a film that made my top 10 of the decade list...it should be a nice anti-Valentine's Day, Valentine's Day movie review!
Can we make April midgets in horror month?
ReplyDeleteThat is something that could probably happen! I'm down for it!
ReplyDeleteI think Hannah wrote somewhere why February. And yep, Black History month did come first and all, and I'm glad to see the effort by many to recognize it in unique ways (much like yourself).
ReplyDeleteNow that I think about it, it should've just been the add-on to Women's History month in March!
*shrugs*
As always, looking forward to your posts. I may do a little more research and find something to post myself.
I heartily support March being Vertically Challenged Month, in honor of Leprechaun's inevitable marathon for St. Patrick's Day.
ReplyDeleteMatt - I gave you an award. Yes another one. For this site and Paracinema. Check it out when you get a chance: http://enterthemancave.blogspot.com/2010/02/best-blog-comments-award.html
ReplyDeleteAshlee: I read it was because the number of days in the month and a womans cycle, which is a bit odd (and gross?!)! I mean, isn't the "cycle" like the enemy of all women?! At least it is in my experience! If any month was the perfect fit for covering and recognizing films that are of the black influence, February is it.
ReplyDeleteI am certainly looking forward to what other blogger's do and now that I have had some time to mule it over, I have a great idea of what I will be doing for the most part, which will be pretty diverse in genre.
And please post something! It has been far too long since I have read your intelligent and insightful ramblings!
Emily: March will be a fun month period! Leprechaun month?! Yes please!
Geof: awesome...I'll head over and check it out as soon as possible!
Sign me up for the Leprechaun month in March please! ;o)
ReplyDeleteDone. March is for the shorties! All are welcome!
ReplyDeletegood idea you got Matt. two suggestions spring to mind: Dolemite and Truck Turner. I've seen Dolemite enough times to have it memorized but i haven't seen it since high school. Truck is just a cool movie.
ReplyDeleteJames and Emily: Warwick Davis, your time shall finally come!
ReplyDeleteWIEC?: I actually thought about doing Dolomite...I have it on VHS and haven't seen it in years either. What better reason than to bust out the ol' VCR?! I saw Truck Turner last year and loved it too.
I'm now so ridiculously excited for Mini March Massacre. Vertically challenged blogging power! (although I think Matt is very tall so his job will be to life the rest of us in the air so our fist bumps can register).
ReplyDeleteOkay...if we're doing vertically challenged individuals in March, does the dancing midget in Twin Peaks count as horror? If so I'm so calling that one.
ReplyDeleteFeb is "Watch a shit load of horror movies" for me, not to be confused with "Watch a butt load of horror movies" March
ReplyDeleteSo your February viewing is going to be far messier and less sanitary?
ReplyDeleteEmily: Ha ha...get on my shoulders and pump them fists!
ReplyDeleteC.L.: I was thinking about the dude from Waxwork, so I say yes!
Carl: Those are always month's well spent!
Emily: Watch out for diarrhea month!
I'm really glad you're doing this, Matt! Can't wait to read your offerings!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Christine...I will have a nice mixture of solid movies and straight up trash!
