Recently, I've been hearing a whole lot about how the month of February, horror bloggers around the net would be dedicated to women and their role in the horror genre. That’s great, and I’m certainly all for it, and I was even thinking about doing a few posts specific to the subject matter throughout the month myself. Then today, I dropped by the wonderful wonder blog, Billy Loves Stu and was reminded that February is Black History Month. The fact that I had to be reminded is a bit embarrassing, but more embarrassing should be the fact that bloggers have taken it upon themselves to pick Black History Month as the month to focus on women in horror. There are 11, count them, ELEVEN other months that are there for the taking, so why February? I’m not taking shots at the people behind women in horror month - any other month, I would be all for it, but it’s a pretty stupid fucking thing to have it in February. I had no plans for a theme month, but I am gonna keep it real and make my main focus of February centered around African American cinema. I’m not prepared in any way whatsoever, but I can pull something out of my ass, plus it gives me an excuse to cover a few Blaxsploitation films!
Anyone have any suggestions or requests, please feel free to suggest and request them.

I'm excited to see what you cover Matt. Aside from some of the more obvious black genre cinema (no, not Leprechaun In Da Hood...okay, yes, Leprechaun in Da Hood), I really have next to no knowledge of what's out there. Personally, this month is going to be too busy for me to take up any theme, but I definitely support your choice.

Yes! March is officially Womens History month so let's celebrate the women then. Although after this black history shunning I'm not entirely sure they deserve a month at all! ....mwahaha

ReplyDeleteI've got my own agenda at MC. This February is my 3rd Annual Blaxploitation Month and it will stay that way. Women of Horror will have to wait. Black Women of Horror is interesting, but I don't see how that could stretched into a whole month...or even a whole week.

Since I do forty weeks (or so) a year of women in horror (or genre) with Beautiful Ladies of Genre, I don't feel like I need a special month for it. I didn't know that February was Black History Month so I'm going to have to fit a few titles in, but February means Valentines to me. Deep down I'm a big softie, kind of, but you'll see. Maybe I need a post about Black Horror Women that I Love? I mean Pam Grier was in Bones! and we all know how great that is!

ReplyDeleteAshlee: I read it was because the number of days in the month and a womans cycle, which is a bit odd (and gross?!)! I mean, isn't the "cycle" like the enemy of all women?! At least it is in my experience! If any month was the perfect fit for covering and recognizing films that are of the black influence, February is it.

ReplyDeletegood idea you got Matt. two suggestions spring to mind: Dolemite and Truck Turner. I've seen Dolemite enough times to have it memorized but i haven't seen it since high school. Truck is just a cool movie.

I'm now so ridiculously excited for Mini March Massacre. Vertically challenged blogging power! (although I think Matt is very tall so his job will be to life the rest of us in the air so our fist bumps can register).
