Admittedly, Don't Be Afraid of the Dark hasn't really been on my radar, and that's not due to a lack of interest or anything like that. I guess it's one of those films I knew would come to me eventually. Now after having the chance to check out this full-trailer for the film, I must say, I am now at full-attention. Don't Be Afraid looks incredibly creepy in a way that screams Guillermo del Toro's involvement, and even if it's only half as good as it looks, it should be pretty solid.
On the other hand, I hate when the under the covers "trick" is used at the end of any trailer. As if I didn't know something was going to happen right then. Maybe it would've been a surprise if Gary Busey were down there instead of a creature. Now THAT would be fucking scary!
Next up I have the full-trailer for Julien Lacombe and Pascal Sid's, Behind the Walls (Derriere Les Murs). I posted the fantastic and very subdued teaser trailer for this film in my last TTT post, and this full-length trailer works well to keep the movie dead in my sights.
To watch the trailer with the English subs you have to turn the CC on, which is located right under that little arrow thing that points upward.
Following up his 2007 breakout film, the fantastic Shotgun Stories, writer/director Jeff Nichols once again teams up with Michael Shannon for Take Shelter. The plot is very simple, focusing on a family man plagued by a series of apocalyptic visions, forcing him to obsess with preparing a bomb shelter, thus causing a rift between him and his family. Is homeboy as crazy as Charles Manson eating fruit loops on your front porch, or are his vision a sign of what's to come? It's an intriguing idea, however, an idea very similar to this was used in the form of George Sibley in the greatest television show ever (outside of Mama's Family), Six Feet Under.
Here I have the trailer for Miguel Ángel Vivas' Kidnapped, a Spanish home invasion film where the family is forced to fight back! Not much to say about this one except the trailer is great and the film looks very promising, however, the dubbing is immensely off putting, so hopefully when the film does see a stateside release there will be a subtitles option.
Our final trailer for the evening is for Eric Valette's Super Hybrid. I'll take a step back and allow this wonderful standard press kit synopsis do all the explaining for me:
"Late one night a mysterious car is brought into the Chicago police impound garage after a deadly traffic accident. The garage's female mechanic, Tilda, and her young, hip fellow mechanics soon discover the car has a mind of its own: It morphs into different cars to confuse them, and instead of needing an engine to run, it breathes. It's a killing machine that is capable of outrunning and outwitting humans. In a high-octane fight to the death, it's our group of determined humans versus the car in this supernatural action-adventure in the vein of Stephen King's 'Christine' and 'Transformers'."
Fucking Transformers and Christine, bro! This movie is totally for all the cool kids that love Transformers and have no idea what Christine is, while nabbing all the older horror fans that think Transformers is lame-o, but totally love Christine! WIN-WIN SITCH, BITCH!!
Super Hybrid is being released by Anchor Bay on August 23rd, and I am so fucking sold. Vroom-vroom.

ReplyDeleteI was fully down and excited for Don't Be Afraid of the Dark until just the other day when I found out that Katie Holmes was in it. I've got a strict "No Scientologists" rule so now I can't see it.
ReplyDeleteThat coupled with Tom Cruise supposedly in line to star in At the Mountains of Madness, Guillermo Del Toro has been alienating me lately. Which is a shame because I love him and I was really psyched for that movie too.
SUPER HYBRID sounds amazing. I'm in!
ReplyDeleteJoe: I can understand that, and as much of a joke as Scientology is, there are a handful of actors that I love that are Scientologists, unfortunately, so it's hard to avoid them.
ReplyDeleteHowever, Cruise certainly isn't someone that I can get behind in anything at all nowadays, and I hate the idea that he is or was attached to Mountains. I also hate that fucking Cameron also has his phony ass involved, too. Hopefully it just goes away, or the right people get involved with Del Toro.
Astro: Right?! So terrible, but thankfully so!
As for Holmes, I think she's only a Scientologist for as long as Cruise stays in the closet. Once that dude is out, she will become free to be a human being again!
My issue with Scientologists is the shady shit the business itself has done over the years. The silliness of the religion itself doesn't really bother me, just because all religions are silly. My thing is a boycott of the notion that Scientology can help your career. I think that's one of the selling points and I want to do my part in taking that selling point away.
ReplyDeleteCameron being involved is a pretty stinky sign too. I so badly want a big budget, balls to the wall Lovecraft movie, and Guillermo is totally the guy for the job... but yeah, as it stands right now, I'm out. Luckily for us, it appears that 3D is dying (contrary to what Cameron thinks) so maybe that aspect of it will get shelved.
Hopefully when Rock of Ages tanks (which it surely will) Cruise will be out too, and maybe we'll get the awesome movie we want.
I think Holmes is a lost cause honestly. I get the feeling she wasn't really all that bright of a bulb to begin with, and now that she's been transformed into whatever the fuck she's supposed to be now, I can't see her going back. Not to mention that even if Tomkat split up, there's no way in hell the Church will let that kid go, and so I think Katie's a permanent fixture.
It's not like she really brought anything to the table to begin with. The only Scientologists I'm really sad to lose were Beck and Jason Lee. I was a little bummed about Will Smith, but at this point, they can have him. I've had enough of him and his troupe of singing and dancing kids. I'm bummed about Travolta, but mostly just because I think he seems like a really nice guy, but a really sad guy, and I think his involvement with the church is the source of a lot of that sadness.
I do have one lapse in my rule though, and that's Elizabeth Moss on Mad Men. I love the shit out of that show. I've got a few justifications for why I can watch that show but not other movies/shows with Scientologists, but really what it comes down to is Mad Men is awesome enough that it wore down my conviction.
While watching the Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark trailer, all I could think was 'Wow, Tom Cruise let Katie Holmes out of her space cage long enough to do a film?'
ReplyDeleteJoe: Man, if only 3D could die just a little faster, right?
ReplyDeleteI totally forgot about the Cruise/Holmes kid factor. She's like Scientology's version of sweet little baby Jesus, but instead of being wrapped up snug in a blanket, she's wrapped up snug in chique designer clothes.
I haven't liked Will Smith since his Fresh Prince days, but I'm with you as far as Lee and Beck, especially Lee, who I have been a fan of since he was a pro-Skater. I still love me the over-the-top antics of Travolta, but I totally agree that he is filled with much sadness. That dude has lost a lot of important people in his life, therefore it makes him an easy target for team L. Ron Hubbard.
Ashlee: I know! I thought she stopped acting after she got with little Tom, but it looks as if he allowed her out for a short period of time.
Her career was doing pretty well when she got involved with him, and now she has lost all individuality and can only be looked at as someone that is involved with Cruise and all of his antics. She's not Joey Potter anymore, sadly.
I just wrote a comment and I think I navigated away before it posted it. If this is a double post, feel free to delete one.
ReplyDeleteI love that Take Shelter trailer! But you knew that...
And I am completely on board with Don't Be Afraid of the Dark. While I don't have much of an opinion of Katie Holmes, I like how she and the little girl look so similar. It really sells the whole package.
Love your trailer posts!
