With the recent news of Ridley Scott officially coming back to the series he started with his original 1979 Science Fiction masterpiece, Alien, I thought I would do something different than simply writing about the excitement and potential that can come from such fantastic news. Instead, I have decided to post some of the artwork that would come to inspire the visual look of Alien (and the following sequels); artwork that would result in astonishing landscapes, intricate set design and one of the most amazing and original creatures ever to be put to celluloid.
H. R. Giger’s brilliantly surrealistic Biomechanical artwork lead to him receiving the Oscar in 1980 for his titular creature design as well as the remarkable environments found within Alien. His artwork is something that lives on very strongly, and forever will it continue to influence all aspects of art, from comics, to video games and even right down to furniture and interior design. I have personally owned at least five of the H. R. Giger calendars and have proudly displayed the gorgeous and sexually explicit Biomechanical artwork in my very own kitchen. And quite frankly, nothing says dinner like an alien sucking on its phallic tail! Who wants hot dogs for lunch?! No matter how perfect of a film Alien is, it's very difficult to say just how well it would have worked had it not been for Geiger’s inspirational artwork. Would this incredibly tense and brilliantly paced movie have had the same effect had it featured the Krites from Critters? I’m not saying that Krites aren’t so dope or anything, but it clearly wouldn’t be the same.
Anyway, without any further ado, here are the pieces that I chose. Most of these photos are taken from Giger’s Necronomicon books and are very much a part of what Alien would eventually came to be.
Hope you enjoy!
All of that incredible work eventually resulted in this...
...easily one my all time favorite movie creatures, the Queen from Aliens!

Thanks, Matt! I typed: can aliens blow themselves? into my search engine, and it brought me to this blog! Thanks to you, I have my answer!
ReplyDeleteNo problem lordlizzie! Giger aliens can definitely blow themselves, aliens like E. T. on the other hand...not so much.
ReplyDeleteThose are some wild pics!
ReplyDeleteEvery time I look at Giger's art after not seeing it for a while, and even with seeing it so many times, it still surprises me at how wildly perverse it is! It is nothing short of creepy, but that is part of the appeal in many ways. Thanks for following, Geof!
ReplyDeleteYou're such a dark horse, Matt. I just discovered your lovely new blog. Great stuff! I reckon I shall return here quite frequently. Keep it up. Thanks for those Giger images. Creepy. Very creepy.
ReplyDeleteI'm happy to introduce people to Giger's insane work, there truly is no other artist quite like him. I am thrilled to have you as a reader, James, and I really hope you enjoy what I post on this blog. Thanks for following too!
ReplyDeleteGiger's stuff always makes me wish I'd invested in the airbrush back when I was actually painting on a regular basis. The Biomechanical landscapes are just so gorgeous and unsettling at the same time, it's hard to not spend hours poring over his books.
ReplyDeleteMy fav piece is still one called Double Torso With Hooks, it combines my love of things dark & otherworldly + asses to a spectacular effect.
Ha! Them is some nice asses in that piece, Mob! That is a great pick, for the reasons you mentioned, and it is one that would not immediately come to mind either.
ReplyDeleteHis art is so very easy to get lost in; every little detail has so much meaning, even in the simplest examples of his work. It is the type of art that you can equate to a car crash. Like how people know there is something taboo and disturbing to see when they look at a violent wreck, still, they cannot help but stare at it in awe and curiosity. In the case of Giger’s art, you stare in awe, curiosity, and in sheer amazement in seeing something that can be so darkly disturbing, yet so beautiful.

The way UFOs travel through space and time is unique. They use something called Black hole-White hole combination to make travel through space easy, fast and comfortable.http://ufo.whipnet.org/alien.races/space.travel/index.html

Chilling how much these remind me of Clive Barker's own visions.
ReplyDeleteA prequel? Why am I the last to know these things. Like, a Poltergeist remake?!?!?! You can't tell me you aren't pissed about that one?!?!?!
Anywho, Giger's work is bloody brilliant and to me, striking in its originality. And the first two Alien movies I cannot get enough of.
So the queen was simply badass. My favorite scene is when she comes out of nowhere to completely rip Bishop in half. If that wasn't a "daaaaaaaayyyyyyuuuuummmmm!" moment, I don't know what is.
Kudos to Ridley Scott. This is something to look forward to.
I'm more than happy to share such great news with you, Ashlee!
ReplyDeleteThe Queen jackin' Bishop up is definitely a favorite moment too - and possibly one of my favorite horror movie moments when it comes right down to it. I have seen Aliens a million times and I always seem to forget that it happens, but when it does...it is soooo dope! Gets me every time!
Thanks for stopping by!
