The Horror Hangover

hangover16

It's Oscar morning and I'm sure at least a few of you will be spending the day gearing up for the events, and letdowns of tonight's big occasion. I know I'll be watching, and more than likely getting pissed about the movies/actors that win while so many great movies/performances are just completely overlooked. It is what it is and as long as Christoph Waltz gets what he deserves, I'll be mostly happy. Okay, that's enough jibber jabber about Hollywood fluff, let's get into what I have for this Sunday's Hangover already…

You might want to buckle up for the first movie today as Joy Ride 2: Dead Ahead (2008) pulls into SyFy at 11:00. This was on a previous Hangover and I remember thinking that it looked like it could possibly be okay. I did like the first film for what it is and Dead Ahead looks to be more of the same. But what's up with the trucker dude's voice in this one? Sounds like Fred Gwynne in Pet Sematary, but less awesome.

Prepare for mediocrity when Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003) shows up on FX at noon. I tried to watch this movie once and couldn't even make it all the way through, which should tell you just about everything you need to know. Maybe this will be something to appreciate in the future, but I doubt it.

At 1:00 Shallow Ground (2005) digs it's way onto SyFy. Even though some of the camera tricks used remind me of late 90's Full Moon features (which is not necessarily a bad thing, mind you), this one has a decent score of 5.2 on IMDB. So it might be worth a shot in the sense that it could be decent, but I would guess otherwise.

Up next, SyFy has Hostel (2005) at 3:00, followed by Hostel Part II (2007) at 5:00. I enjoyed Hostel quite a bit and like very few, enjoy the sequel even more so and my reasons why will have to come at a more appropriate time. While I personally consider it a solid pick for pick of the week, there really isn't much competition this weekend either, so I'll make this double dose of terror my pick of the week!

At 3:30, the mediocrity from earlier comes full circle with Blade: Trinity (2004) on Spike. Another part 3, that is more like a number 2 (that's code word for poop). This is one that I could only watch in small doses, and while it isn't as bad as T3, it's pretty weak in comparison to the first and especially the second film. I would still watch it, though, but only if it was on at the right time and nothing better was available.

That does it for this week…hope you all have a great night and enjoy the Oscars if you're planning on watching them!

  1. A) agreed with you on HOSTEL and HOSTEL 2, at least in theory. I like part 2 for a lot of weird reasons, myself.

B)...yet, the brutality & gross-out value (and whole point?) of the HOSTEL movies seems sorta lost if they're putting 'em on SyFy, doesn't it?

  2. The Oscars are today?! Sweet I will be sure to miss it. I'm curious to see what the TV edits of Hotel 1 and 2 will look like. Each one will probably be like 30 minutes long a piece with commercials!

  3. J. Astro took the words right out of my mouth. What's the point of showing those films on network TV? It will be terribly edited.

And Aaron, you might have reason to watch the Oscars tonight. My geeked out heart skipped a beat when I read this: http://www.bloody-disgusting.com/news/19326

  4. Astro: Ya know, I totally didn't even think of how little they can show in either of the Hostel films with all the tits and violence. It would be a lot better on USA or FX, two channels that do amazing work with their censoring. For example, Jay's voice over hysterically done by someone else in Mallrats, or "I'm tired of the monkey flipping snakes, one this Monday through Friday plane" in Snakes on a Plane. Shit is epic!

Aaron: The Oscars are super annoying, but I am a glutton for punishment and it gives me a reason to yell about how people in this world are morons.

POT: You sir are the man for that little tidbit of info! Also, I believe Roger Corman is getting a lifetime achievement award tonight too. That alone is one for the good guys!

  5. I love that you have a picture of Tara Reid up here *chuckling!*

I have been dying to see Hostel 2, but cannot bring myself to watch it cut. I first had mixed feelings about Hostel but I found that I actually did enjoy it as a whole. It worked excellent in the fear factor element. The mood, tone, and pacing was great too.

Did Sandra Bullock take one for racism, yet?

  6. Ha ha, that Reid photo is for Hollywood!

Like I said, I liked the second one better and that had to do with it delving deeper into the people behind the killings. I also loved the group of girls and Lauren German is fantastic as the lead, plus I think Bijou Phillips is hot!

And yes, she took one for saving the only black person who isn't on drugs and comes from the hood. Have you seen the film? Emily's review at Deadly Dolls is fucking amazing and everything I knew the movie would be. Blech!

  7. Emily's post (and I put my two cents in) is pure proof to me that some of us aren't avoided the real issues of what the film actually represents and not blindly praising it for being one of the condescending feel-gooder's that assauge that convenient 'white guilt' paradigm.

    *huff!*

My cousin raved about Hostel 2 as well so I gotta get ahold of it soon. And you upped the ante by letting me know they do more story diving in this one: excellent!

  8. Tell me what you thought of Shallow Ground, Matt. I actually liked it quite a lot.

  9. Ashlee: I figured you would get a kick out of it...everyone says how it is such a great story, but all of the people that say that are blind and naive. Huff indeed.

I hope you get to check out Hostel 2 and let me know what you think of it when you do...I'm very curious as to your specific take on the sequel!

Chris: Unfortunately, I had to work Sunday morning, so I didn't see any of the films. I will keep that in mind though and seek it out...I know it plays often on SyFy!
